I have grave misgivings about meeting with the Russian and his employer, but I feel that we have little choice but to acquiesce to his request. We must give the impression that we do not fear him, and it has serious potential to develop future contacts for Proper as well as for me and our group as established runners. It would be a great boost to our profile in the shadows if our name were associated with the likes of Kir Morgan. Proper’s association with another megacorp would likely enhance their reputation with the other corps, and it could give them the leverage to move up in the corporate world. I worry, though, as all snake charmers do: Eventually, everyone is bitten.
The matter of the Nissan, while less obviously dangerous, has the same potential for harm to our cadre. While we could definitely learn more about a past job with what turned out to be a VERY high profile, from this perspective, it appears just to be a backdoor into the viper’s den. If we could conduct a small investigation discreetly, it could be a simple job with a significant payout, but I would not consider discretion our specialty as a unit.
So, given the choice between the snake or the poison, it seems that I choose both. Perhaps the scent of multiple predators will muddy the senses of these beasts, or perhaps I will die sooner and Proper will save on my pension. Time will tell all.
